Women can lose up to 20% of their bone mass in the 5-7 years following menopause, making them more susceptible to osteoporosis. One in two women and one in eight men over age 50 will have an osteoporosis-related fracture in their lifetime. Osteoporosis currently affects 10 million Americans and another 18 million also need treatment for low bone mass. Eighty percent of those affected are women. Few people currently know that they are at risk until they sustain a fracture.
